OUR TALE

The grove is a retreat for all and has fast become the
hub of ludwell life.

Many join the team for special occasions, a Sunday roast, a week long escape or simply a cosy drink in our village bar where you will find many a local relaxing with a pint.

THE FAMILY

The Grove family dates back, through illegitimate descent, all the way to William the Conqueror.

The family crest, on the wall above the fireplace, includes the motto ‘Ny Dessux Ny Dessoux’ meaning ‘Neither Above Nor Below’. It also includes a red hand which represents the non-voting hereditary Baronetcy awarded to Colonel Grove for supporting the King against Cromwell in the Civil War.

THE HISTORY

The original part of the building dates back to the 16th Century and is Grade II listed. Many of the original features are retained in the cosy snug bar including mullion windows and carved cornices. The thatched part of the premises has sadly been damaged by fire twice and has been completely rebuilt with the original exterior stones being painstakingly used throughout.

The premises have been licensed since the 17th century and has variously traded under its current name and as The Black Dog.

THE GROVE TODAY

We have fantastic amenities at the Grove with free wifi throughout, a residents lounge, sun terrace to the rear and six 4* AA rated bedrooms. The Grove team are all female and we believe this makes our attention to detail exquisite. Nothing is any trouble to us and our returning guests do become part of the Grove family.

Locals, visitors, walkers, hikers, pilots (from the local airfield) dogs and children alike are all welcome, we are perfectly situated for a long days walking through the beautiful villages in the Donhead Valley.

dog & cat friendly

Please note, furry friends (cats and dogs) are also welcome to stay in our pet friendly 4* AA rated bedrooms – Buddy our resident Labrador is partial to having the odd friend round for dinner!!
